Posture 3 – Forward Head Posture & the Neck Tuner

Forward head posture, text neck, turtle neck, what ever you want to call it, is so prevalent nowadays due to the change in lifestyle over the last 20 years. Since everyone is either on their phones, computers, laptops multiple times a day, their body’s transition to the most used position.  It is essentially when you head sticks forward over your shoulders, shoulders round forward and upper back hunches.

When your head sticks forward over your shoulders, there is an exponential amount of force created around the neck and shoulder areas around your spine. Think about this your head, it weighs around 4-5kg, as much as a bowling ball. If you hold your bowling ball close to your body its not too heavy. However if you hold it with both arms outstretched in front, it feels A LOT heavier. The weight has obviously not changed it’s how it’s distributed that has changed. The same concept applies to your head. The further your head sticks out the more the muscles around the back of your neck and shoulders have to work.

Chronically this can lead to neck and shoulder pain, headaches, poor breathing patterns, decreased energy, shoulder dysfunctions, and just looking very old!
